Job Description:

The Life Science Business Unit within Thermo Fisher Scientific MSD division provides valuable workflow solutions for biological research. Recent developments in TEM hardware and image processing software have allowed 3D structure determination of protein complexes at atomic resolution (SPA workflow) and triggered boom of cryoEM in structural biology. Preparation of high-quality cryoEM specimen represents the main remaining bottleneck in this workflow and broad adoption of the cryoEM methodology in academia and pharmaceutical industry. The internship will be focused on application development of new methods for cryoEM sample preparation.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Collaboration on application development of new vitrification methods
  • Preparation of cryoEM samples for high-resolution cryoEM imaging
  • Imaging and characterization of vitrified samples by cryo-TEM
  • Image analysis and documentation of results in regular reports


This position is ideal for a PhD student with background in technical or life sciences and experience with electron microscopy (TEM and/or SEM). However, all interested candidates are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should possess the following combination of education and experience:

  • MSc or PhD in Physics, Material Science or Biology
  • Ability to work independently as well as in the team
  • Proactive attitude and systematic approach to problem solving
  • Good communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Experience with image processing and scripting is a plus
  • Availability to work part-time 20 h/week for one year
