About

Thermo Fisher Scientific is a world leader in science products and services. The company employs more than 100,000 people globally and has a turnover of over USD 40 billion. We supply our customers with an extensive portfolio of science products – from basic laboratory equipment to state-of-the-art analytical devices, thereby helping to make the world a healthier, cleaner, and safer place.

The Brno Technology Center is one of the largest branches of Thermo Fisher, not just in Europe, but globally too. It’s a focal point for extensive manufacturing and state-of-the-art development, supported by an array of other departments, such as logistics, service, sourcing, finance, and HR.

We focus on developing and producing state-of-the-art scientific devices – electron microscopes and spectrometers. Among our customers are world-famous universities, leading electronics producers, pharmaceutical companies, and development centers in the space, semi-conductor, mining, automotive, and aviation industries.

Our devices help make the world a healthier, cleaner, and safer place.

What you might not know

  • They say about one third of all electron microscopes in the world are produced in Brno, and so Brno can rightfully claim the title “capital of electron microscopy”.
  • The first electron microscope was created in 1931. Ernst Ruska is considered the inventor of the electron microscope, and in 1986 he won the Noble Prize in Physics for his invention.
  • The first electron microscope in the Czech Republic was developed in 1950 by the engineers Armin Delong, Vladimír Drahoš, Ladislav Zobač, and Jan Speciálný.
  • In the 20th century, Czechoslovakia was one of the leading producers of electron microscopes in the world.

  • The resolution achieved by an electron microscope is approximately like gazing at the moon and being able to see Neil Armstrong’s footprints.
  • Samples for transmission electron microscopes range from 10 nm to 100 nm thick, which is a thousandth of the thickness of a human hair.
  • With small dual beam microscopes, we’re not only able to observe samples, we can also process or cut them.
  • Electron microscopes contain a vacuum. Without it, electrons couldn’t get to the sample and the resulting image wouldn’t be clear.

  • Vacuums, however, have a deleterious effect on biological samples, which must therefore be quickly frozen to -196 °C before being placed into an electron microscope.
  • In 2017, the Noble Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the development of cryo-electron microscopy to Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank, and Richard Henderson.

Our activities

The mission of Thermo Fisher Scientific is to enable our customers to make the world a healthier, cleaner, and safer place. Therefore, we try to behave responsibly with regard to our surroundings and the region in which we operate. We support science, technology, and education at all levels. We are committed to protecting the environment, and ecology is one of our priorities. Nor do we pass by those in need. We cooperate with several charities, and a large number of our employees are involved in charity, participating in activities beyond the scope of their working duties.

We enjoy sport not only on our way to work

We’re fans of sport of any kind. We have a gym, a sports field, and a bike room in the company. We also have a hockey team, a running team, and own team of dragon boats. Many of our employees bike to work – we’re a certified biker-employer and we support emission-free transport.

We support STEM education

SWe try and promote science, technology, engineering, and math (the so-call STEM subjects), and support anyone who decides to study them. Our objective is not only to increase general interest in these fields, but also to increase diversity in these disciplines. This is also why we cooperate e.g. with the Vida Science Center, Czechitas, Technical Museum in Brno, and the FabLab project. In cooperation with BRuNO Family Park, we organize regular STEM day camps.

Microscopic Brno

“State-of-the-art” is not only a term deservedly applied to the electron microscopes created in Brno, it’s an adjective that is also true of the science carried out here when these devices are put to work. Our products are used e.g. by CEITEC, Institute of Instrument Technology of the Academy of Science, and the Institute of Material Physics of the Academy of Science. With some of these institutes we cooperate in the area of development, expanding the very possibilities of electron microscopy itself. Together with other partners, each year we organize the Days of Electron Microscopy, which is the biggest event in our field for engaging the general public and raising awareness.

Serious about the environment

We’re signatories to the memorandum aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in the Brno region by 40% by 2030. The roof of our building is partly covered by vegetation, and partly by one of the largest solar power plants of its kind in the Czech Republic.
Our company also consumes electricity generated purely from renewable resources.

Science in the lead role

Many of our colleagues teach at universities, but we also support science in other ways. Each year we award a grant to scientists working in electron microscopy. We are the main partner of the Science Slam project, which tries to introduce scientists’ work in a fun way. Our colleagues have participated in some of these theatrical performances and explained the principles of how electron microscopes work.

Charity and a helping hand to those in need

There’s a so-called Charity Committee in the company, focused on increasing employees’ awareness of the shared personal responsibility for life around them. The team initiates and coordinates social-benefit activities, trying to engage as many employees as possible. We cooperate e.g. with the Rajhrad Regional Charity, Ratolest Brno, Brno Faculty Hospital, Blue Hippo Endowment Fund, Dagmar Children’s Home, and Brno ZOO.
